MORGAN , EDWARD ( 1817 - 1871 ), Calvinistic Methodist minister ;

b. at Cwmbelan hamlet, near Llanidloes , 20 Sept. 1817 , son of Edward Morgan , farmer and cloth manufacturer . After some time as an assistant in drapers’ shops at Llanidloes he entered Bala C.M. College in 1839 . In Jan. 1840 he went to Dyffryn Ardudwy as master of the British School ; in 1841 he began to preach , returning to Bala in 1842 . From 1843 to 1845 he was again schoolmaster at Dyffryn , and in the latter year he became a student at Edinburgh University and the New College there. He was ordained in 1847 and became pastor of the church at Dolgelley .

On 19 July 1849 he m. Jennette Griffith Humphreys , daughter of Richard Humphreys , Dyffryn (q.v.) , and went to live at Dyffryn , where he remained for the rest of his life. He was already a popular preacher and soon became a leader in his Connexion and a foremost advocate of fixed pastorates and of the education of the ministry . In 1856 he was appointed to superintend the collection of a fund for the Bala Methodist College , and by 1870 , largely by his personal efforts, a sum of about £30,000 was realised. He was an early contributor to the Traethodydd , and from 1854 to 1856 he edited Y Methodist . He also contributed some articles to Y Gwyddoniadur . He was moderator of the North Wales Calvinistic Methodist Association in 1865 , and of the general assembly in 1870 . He d. 9 May 1871 . Two volumes of his sermons, edited by Dr. Owen Thomas , were published ( 1876 and 1882 ). His widow d. 27 June 1888 . Their eldest son was Kichard Humphreys Morgan (q.v.) .
