MORRIS , LEWIS ( 1760 - 1855 ), Calvinistic Methodist exhorter ;

b. 2 June 1760 at Coed-y-gweddill , Llangelynnin, Mer. His thoughts were turned to religion by hearing David Morris of Tŵr-gwyn ( 1744 - 1791 ), (q.v.) preach at Machynlleth , and the Methodist cleric John Williams of Lledrod ( 1747 - 1831 ) (q.v.) at Aberystwyth . When over 30, he learnt to read, and in 1791 began preaching . He suffered much persecution — once he had to walk all the way to Llwyngwair in north Pembrokeshire (see Bowen of Llwyn-gwair ) to get a preacher 's certificate to avoid being pressed for military service. In general, he preached only in his native county. His reminiscences, ‘ Adgofion Hen Bregethwr ,’ in Y Traethodydd , 1847 , are interesting. He d. 11 March 1855 .
