OWAIN ap GRUFFYDD (d. 1236 ), prince of Deheubarth ,

joint heir with Rhys Ieuanc of Gruffydd (q.v.) , eldest son of the ‘lord’ Rhys (q.v.) . His mother was Matilda , daughter of William de Breos (see under Braose ). Though at times temporarily in opposition to Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (q.v.) , he and his brother found in the prince of Gwynedd a powerful patron and defender against their uncles — Rhys Gryg and Maelgwn (qq.v.) . Originally endowed with land in Cantref Bychan , the re-division of the ‘lord’ Rhys 's dominions in 1216 gave him lands north of the Aeron , which were extended to cover the greater part of northern Ceredigion when Rhys Ieuanc d. in 1222 . He d. at Strata Florida on 18 Jan. 1236 and was buried there alongside his parents and brother. He was succeeded by one son — Maredudd .
