PHILLIPS , EVAN ( 1829 - 1912 ), Calvinistic Methodist minister ;

b. 22 Oct. 1829 in a cottage called Milestone in the Capel y Drindod neighbourhood; his mother was a second cousin of Christmas Evans 's. When he was a little over 20 years of age he began to preach at Capel y Drindod chapel. He then spent two years at Atpar school, Newcastle Emlyn , and in 1853 was admitted to Trevecka College . Early in Oct. 1859 he m. Anne Jones of Cwrcoed , near Penrhiw-llan . After spending some months as superintendent of the societies at Llanon he went to live at Newcastle Emlyn . In Aug. 1860 he was ordained at Neath and later in the year received a call to Bethel chapel , Newcastle Emlyn , of which he was minister for the rest of his life. He was elected moderator of his Association in 1889 and of the General Assembly in 1899 . He was one of the great preachers of his age. His ideas were so fresh and sparkling, his pictures so natural, and his eloquence so persuasive that ‘ the twenty-minute preacher ’ won a very special place for himself. His sermons were characterized by a combination of the poet's imagination, the teacher's acumen, and the evangelical's ardour. He d. 29 Sept. 1912 .
