PUGHE , JOHN ( Ioan ab Hu Feddyg ; 1814 - 1874 ), physician and littérateur .

Born 8 Sept. 1814 at Ysgubor Fawr , Chwaen-wen , Anglesey , the eldest son of David Roberts Pughe and Elizabeth his wife. He qualified as a doctor after training at S. Thomas's Hospital , London , where he received the degree of F.R.C.S. He first practised at Barmouth but later moved to Aberdovey where he spent most of his life. In his early days he lived at Clynnog-fawr, Caerns. , and was a close friend of Eben Fardd . In Eben 's Cyff Beuno there are many notes by Pughe . He published an entertaining biography of the bard: Eben Fardd: ei nodion a'i hynodion . He also translated Meddygon Myddfai, the Physicians of Myddfai , edited by John Williams , Ab Ithel , and published by the Welsh MSS. Society , 1864 . He m. Catherine Samuel , daughter of Samuel Samuel , Caernarfon , 21 Feb. 1839 ; she d. 14 Sept. 1862 , at Penhelyg , Aberdovey . Four of their sons were physicians , John Eliot Howard (d. 1880 ), Rheinallt Navalaw , Taliesin William Owen (d. 1893 ), who practised at Liverpool , and David Roberts (d. 1885 ), who lived in Montgomeryshire . Their daughter was BUDDUG ANWYLINI PUGHE , the artist , who d. in Liverpool , 2 March, 1939 , at the age of 83. Buddug Pughe wrote a history of her native district , but the manuscript was never published.

John Pughe was prominent in the public life of Aberdovey and district, being a justice of the peace and a patron of all charitable and religious causes . His religious leanings were towards the Plymouth Brethren , for whom he preached in the small church which he established in the district. He d. 9 April 1874 , and was buried in the family vault at Cwm Maethlon burial ground .



His brother was DAVID WILLIAM PUGHE ( 1821 - 1862 ), second son of D. R. Pughe ; b. at Chwaen-wen , Anglesey , 21 Aug. 1821 . He too was a physician , who trained in Dublin and London , qualified as M.R.C.S. and settled at Clynnog-fawr . He wrote poetry and contributed essays to Welsh newspapers and periodicals , and several of his booklets on the castles of North Wales were published by H. Humphreys , Caernarfon : The History of Beaumaris Castle , The History of Caernarvon Castle , Historical sketch of Conway Castle , Historical sketch of Harlech Castle , Observations on the antiquities of the parish of Clynnog Fawr . He d. 22 Nov. 1862 .
