REES, JAMES (1803-1880), printer and publisher;
b. at Carmarthen, 1803. After spending some years in London, he moved to Caernarvon about 1831, where he was employed as foreman with William Potter and Co. After Potter retired, Rees succeeded him about the year 1840. In addition to publishing the Caernarvon and Denbigh Herald, he started the Herald Cymraeg in 1854 as a penny newspaper (with James Evans as its editor) and was responsible for both newspapers until 1871, when they were taken over by John Evans, Caellenor, Caernarvon. An alderman and mayor on more than one occasion, he also acted as high bailiff of the County Court at Caernarvon. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. He d. 21 June 1880 at Castle Street, Caernarvon.
