ROBERTS , HUW (‘ Syr Huw Roberts ’ or ‘ Huw Roberts Len ’) ( fl. c. 1555-1619 ), poet, author, and cleric .

No details are known concerning his early life, but it appears that he went, as servitor , to Christ Church , Oxford , and graduated B.A. there, 6 Feb. 1577/1578 . After entering holy orders it is said that he became rector of Aberffraw in Anglesey ; he became M.A. in 1585 . A large number of his poems remain in manuscript, most of these being cywyddau to various members of North Wales landed families, including those of Bodorgan , Henblas , Mellteyrn , Mysoglen , Penhesgyn , Penrhyn , and Plas Iolyn . He composed a cywydd of welcome to Henry Rowland , bishop of Bangor , on the return of the latter from London in 1610 , one on the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 , a poem in the form of a dialogue between a cleric and his lover, a number of various englynion which include one to the Virgin Mary , and ymryson (controversy) poems addressed to Gruffudd Llwyd , and also to Llywelyn Siôn of Glamorgan . His prose work, The day of Hearing: or six lectures upon the latter part of the third Chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews … , was published in London in 1600 .
