ROBERTS , MORRIS ( Morris ap Robert ; d. c. 1723 ), poet, and carpenter ;

a native of Tynllidiart , Llanuwchllyn, Mer. , who later lived at Bala . He was a Congregationalist . His daughter m. John Evans of Bala , Methodist exhorter ( 1723 - 1817 ) (q.v.) . Examples of his poetry, in strict and free metres, are found in manuscript; they include cywyddau , one on Bala Lake , and another on Judgement Day, and englynion composed to each other by Richard John Jenkin and himself. A number of free-metre poems, mainly on religious and moral themes, also remain; six of them are included in Blodeu-Gerdd Cymry . No details are known concerning the poet 's life, but a number of anecdotes about him are found in Y Brython ( Tremadoc ), Y Gwyliedydd , Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry , and in Hanes Eglwysi Annibynol Cymru . Some of his work was printed by O. M. Edwards in Beirdd y Berwyn and Beirdd y Bala (both in ‘ Cyfres y Fil ’). And many years after Morris Roberts 's death, William Thomas ( 1749 - 1809 ), (q.v.) , Independent minister at Bala , printed ( Tre-vecka , 1793 ) a religious tract by him, Cyngor i'r Cynmry mewn Deuddeg o Bennodau .
