ROBERTS , WILLIAM ( 1809 - 1887 ), Calvinistic Methodist minister, editor, and author ;

b. 25 Sept. 1809 at Llannerch-y-medd , Anglesey . He was educated under John Richards , who held the living of Llannerch-y-medd , and at a school kept at Holyhead by William Griffith ( 1801 - 1881 ) (q.v.) , Congregational minister . He began to preach in 1829 at Hyfrydle chapel , Holyhead . He then went to Dublin for a further course of education; there he gathered together some of the Welsh -speaking residents, preached to them, and so formed the first Welsh church in that city. He came to be considered one of the most popular preachers born in Anglesey . Roberts was ordained in 1848 . About the year 1855 he went to minister to the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist church in New York city . Whilst there he edited the first Welsh Bible published ( 1858 ) by the American Bible Society . He also edited, from 1857 to 1800 , four volumes of Y Traethodydd yn America . In 1877 he left New York to take charge of Moriah Welsh Calvinistic Methodist church at Utica , New York state , remaining there until his death in 1887 . He edited Y Cyfaill ( Utica ); he also published the following works — Darlith ar Elfennau Pabyddiaeth , 1855 ; Traethawd ar Etholedigaeth Gras , 1856 ; and Y Pechod o esgeuluso Moddion Gras , 1865 . He d. 2 Oct. 1887 .
