SION MOWDDWY ( fl. c. 1575-1613 ), poet .

He sang the praises of the aristocracy throughout Wales , from Mostyn to Glamorgan . There were occasions when he spent a long time in Glamorgan . He indulged in flyting poetry with Meurug Dafydd of Llanishen (q.v.) concerning the rights of the strolling bards in Gwent and that neighbourhood, c. 1575-80 , and he also had a poetic disputation with Llywelyn Siôn of Llangewydd (q.v.) . He is not mentioned as one of the bards who attended the eisteddfod at Caerwys , 1567 ; he may have been too young. There is no foundation for Iolo Morganwg 's story that he was the son of the ‘ Red Tinker of Mawddwy ,’ that he followed his father's trade, and that he m. an heiress in Mawddwy .
