THOMAS, EVAN (Bardd Horeb ; 1795-1867), poet and tailor; eldest son of Thomas Francis of Melin Pant Olwen, Llandysul, Cards., and grandson on his mother's side of Ifan Tomos Rhys (q.v. on this page). He m. Margaret Charles, daughter of H. Charles of Cwrt Manarorion, Llangeler, and grand-daughter of Jenkin Jones (q.v.) of Llwyn-rhyd-Owen. Although he lived for a time at Brecon he is generally associated with Horeb, Llandysul. He was greatly influenced by the provincial eisteddfod and by Daniel Evans (Daniel Ddu o Geredigion, q.v.). His poetry in both the classical and ‘free’ metres was edited by Evan Pan Jones (q.v.) and published at Lampeter in 1875 under the title Telyn Ifan. He d. 2 Oct. 1867, ‘at the age of 72’; he and his wife were buried at Llandysul.
