THOMAS, EZEKIEL (1818-1893), Calvinistic Methodist minister and author;
b. 1818, son of Morgan and Catherine Thomas of Pwll-mawr, Llansamlet, Glam. He was apprenticed to a stone-mason but, at an early age, began to preach at Cwm chapel, Llansamlet. Although he was ordained at Cowbridge Association, 1857, he never took charge of a church. He was regarded as a profound thinker and his intellectual interests were unusual. His first book was on geology, Daeareg Parth Gorllewinol Morganwg (Cwmafan, 1875), and this was followed by Human Harmony (Cwmafan, 1877) — a dissertation on the connexion between God, the nation, and the Church. He published Sylwadau ar yr Epistol at yr Hebreaid (Hirwaun) in 1881; Cyfiawnhad trwy Ffydd (Swansea) in 1882; and Adolygiad ar Farn y Tri Doctor (Morriston) in 1890 — the last was a controversial dissertation on the subject of the authorship of the epistle to the Hebrews. He d. 12 March 1893 and was buried in Cwm chapel burial ground.
