THOMAS, THOMAS MORGAN (1828-1884), missionary; b. at Llanharan, Glam., 13 March 1828. He entered Brecon College in 1854 and was ordained for the mission field at Cwm-bach, Aberdare, 11 May 1858. He m. Anne Morgan, daughter of Jonah Morgan, pastor of the Congregational church at Cwm-bach. In June 1858 they sailed for Matabele-land, South Africa. In 1862 his wife died and he m. Caroline Hutchinson Elliott, daughter of William Elliott, a missionary in South Africa, in 1864. He returned to Wales in April 1871 and on account of a misunderstanding between him and the London Missionary Society he was dismissed the following Oct. In June 1874 a sum of about one thousand pounds collected by the Welsh churches was presented to him and this enabled him to return to Matabele-land, independent of the London Missionary Society. He published a few elementary books in the native language, including a book of hymns. He also published a book both in English (and in Welsh) called Eleven years in Central South Africa (London, 1873). He d. 8 Jan. 1884.
