WILLIAMS , PETER ( 1756 - 1837 ), cleric and author ;

christened 9 Oct. 1756 , son of Edward Williams of the township of Ledbrook Major , Northop, Flints. , and Ann his wife. He matriculated at Oxford from Christ Church , 23 May 1776 , and took the degree of B.A. in 1780 , proceeding to the degree of M.A. in 1783 . After his ordination he spent some time as chaplain of Christ Church , returning to Wales in 1790 , when he was instituted (4 May) to the vicarage of Bangor . He was also master of Friars school , Bangor [ 1790-1802 ]. He took the degrees of B.D. and D.D. in 1802 . On 27 Oct. 1802 he was appointed rector of Llanbedrog with Llangïan and Llanfihangel Bachellaeth , and also archdeacon of Merioneth ; on 1 July 1809 , he resigned the archdeaconry, taking in its place the prebend of Penmynydd . This in turn he resigned, receiving instead, on 21 Nov. 1818 , the vicarage of Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch in the Vale of Clwyd . In 1820 his son, Edward , succeeded him there; but Peter Williams retained the living of Llanbedrog until his death on 20 Feb. 1837 , at Llanbedrog , where he was buried 25 Feb . He had a son Edward , and another, Cyril . Peter Williams preached a sermon, which was afterwards published, before the University of Oxford on Ascension Day, 1786 . He also published a number of works, including A Short Vindication of the Established Church ( Oxford , 1803 ); four volumes of Welsh sermons ( Dolgelley , 1813-14 ); and an edition of Charles Edwards 's (q.v.) Y Ffydd Ddiffuant ( Dolgelley , 1824 ).
