WILLIAMS , WILLIAM ( Gwilym Twrog ; 1768 - 1836 ), poet ;

b. 22 Nov. 1768 in the parish of Maentwrog, Mer. , and christened in Ffestiniog parish church . He wrote numerous englynion , cywyddau , awdlau , and hymns, many of which were published in Welsh periodicals — Seren Gomer , 1823-35 , Y Dysgedydd , 1823-31 , Y Gwyliedydd , 1824 , Tywysog Cymru , 1832-3 , Y Gwladgarwr , 1834-5 . He was official bard to the Llanfair ( Merioneth ) Cymreigyddion society in 1823 , and to a similar society at Maentwrog in 1825 . He won a prize offered by ‘ Cymdeithas Cymreigyddion Llundain ’ in 1834 for a cywydd on the subject of a decision given by lord Lyndhurst in the Caernarvon assize of 1832 . His home was Garth Gwyn , in the parish of Maentwrog ; he d. at Tŷ Nant in the same parish on 11 Aug. 1836 , being buried in the burial ground attached to the Scotch Baptist church of Ramoth , Llanfrothen, Mer. , of which he was a member.
