WILLIAMS , WILLIAM ( Gwilym ab Ioan ; 1800 - 1868 ), Welsh-American poet ;

b. at Bala. Mer. , and educated in an elementary school there. Emigrating to the U.S.A. in 1825 , he became a merchant in New York and, in time, secretary of the S. David's Charitable Society . He took the prize at the Abergavenny eisteddfod of 1837 , for elegiac englynion on Thomas Price ( Carnhuanawc , q.v.) ; he also won prizes for poems submitted to eisteddfodau in the U.S.A. Many of his poetical compositions are printed in Y Cyfaill , Y Cenhadwr Americanaidd , etc. He d. in New York , 28 Jan. 1868 .
