HUGHES , DAVID ( EOS IAL ) ( 1794? - 1862 ), poet and publisher .

Few facts are known of his early life, but it is believed that he was b. at Brynllwynog , Bryneglwys , in 1794 or 1795 . There is evidence, however, that he lived at Cynwyd , near Corwen , from 1824 to 1831 . He was twice married (his first wife, who was buried at Llangar , may have been a native of Cynwyd ), and had eight children. Hughes first attracted attention as a poet at an eisteddfod held by the Corwen Society of Cymreigyddion , held on S. David's Day 1824 , and from then until 1835 he was a frequent competitor. In 1839 there was published a volume of his poems, in strict and free metres. Much of its content is of a popular appeal and of ephemeral value. After a somewhat intemperate youth he came under the influence of the temperance revivalists and soon proved himself to be one of their foremost champions. In 1837 he wrote two pamphlets entitled Ffrwyth y Profiad neu Waedd yn Erbyn Meddwdod and Araith Beelsebub Tywysog y Fagddu Fawr . No history of the Temperance Movement of the last century could ignore his contribution. He was also an ardent member of the Oddfellows . For some time about 1836 Hughes attended the Baptist chapel at Cynwyd , and later he may have been admitted to membership of the Baptist chapel at Llansantffraid , where he lies buried. In 1837 he set up a home-made wooden press , and with some rejected type, acquired from Thomas Thomas , a Chester printer , he printed a few books and a number of carols and ballads .
