DAVIES , JOHN DANIEL ( 1874 - 1948 ), editor and author ;

b. 12 Jan. 1874 , at Gwynfryn , Aberderfyn , Ponciau, Denb. , one of the seven children of Daniel Davies and his wife. Having completed his schooling he was apprenticed to David Jones , printer , at Rhosymedre , and afterwards to Richard Mills , printer of the Rhos Herald . He m. Mary Ellen , dau. of William Humphreys (‘ Elihu ’), of Blaenau Ffestiniog , 25 Apr. 1900 . He settled in Blaenau Ffestiniog and in 1906 became the editor and owner of Y Rhedegydd . He was a preacher with the Scottish or Sandemanian Baptists and had an unbounded admiration for J.R. Jones , Ramoth ( DWB , 488; and see his article in Y Geninen , Apr. 1922 ). His poem on the temptation of Christ won a chair for him at the Penmachno eisteddfod . He did not compete for prizes after that, but devoted his energies to the composition of hymns, sermons, a catechism for children, and articles on a variety of subjects . His publications include Emynwyr Gwynedd , 1905 , Saith Canhwyllbren Aur (sermons), and an account of the Scottish and Campbellite Baptists in Wales , which appeared in the transactions of Cymdeithas Hanes Bedyddwyr Cymru , 1940-1 . He edited the Scottish Baptist periodical Yr Ymwelydd for many years. He d. 9 Apr. 1948 and was bur. in Bethesda cemetery, Blaenau Ffestiniog .
