GRIFFITH-JONES , EBENEZER ( 1860 - 1942 ), Congregational minister and college principal ;

b. 5 Feb. 1860 at Merthyr Tydfil , son of the Rev. E. Aeron Jones and Mary Ann , dau. of David Griffiths ( 1792 - 1863 ; DWB , 303) , missionary to Madagascar . Although he received the best education that was possible at the time he attributed his culture and scholarship mainly to the influence of his father. He went to Carmarthen Presbyterian College , 1875-78 , and was an assistant teacher at Swansea , 1879-1880 before going to New College , London ( 1880-85 ), where he won many prizes and scholarships; he graduated B.A. (London) in 1882 . He ministered in St. John's Wood , 1885-87 , Park Chapel , Llanelli , 1887-90 , Stroud Green , 1890-98 , Balham , 1898-1907 ; he was principal of the Yorkshire United Independent College , Bradford , 1907-32 . He was awarded the degree of D.D. ( honoris causa ) by the University of Edinburgh , was Chairman of the Congregational Union of England and Wales , and Chairman of the Council of Free Churches . He was the author of The Ascent through Christ , Providence , The Master and his Method , The Economics of Jesus , and of a large number of articles in theological and philosophical journals. He was a stout Nonconformist with definite opinions and a doughty debater on religious and public questions. He m. Carita (d. 1936 ) dau. of T.F. Stoner , Elstree , and his wife, and they had 2 children. He d. 22 March 1942 .
