IRBY, GEORGE FLORANCE, 6th Baron BOSTON (1860-1941), landowner and scientist;
b. 6 Sept. 1860, eldest s. of Florance George Irby, 5th Baron Boston, and Augusta Caroline, dau. of the 3rd Baron de Saumarez. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with 2nd class honours in Modern History in 1882. From 1885 to 1886 he was lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. He had estates in Lincolnshire, Buckinghamshire and a seat at Lligwy, Anglesey. Throughout his life he devoted much of his leisure to branches of natural science, especially astronomy, botany and entomology, and was a Fellow both of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Geological Society of London. As president of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society and Field Club from its formation in 1912 to within a short time of his death, he took a keen interest in archaeological activities, and did much to facilitate the investigation of the Lligwy Romano-British village. He was also associated with the excavation at Segontium and Conovium (Caerhun). For his services to national culture the University of Wales in 1936 conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He d. 16 September 1941.
