JONES , LLEWELYN ( 1894 - 1960 ), minister (Presb.), editor and author ;

b. in 1894 at Llandegfan , Anglesey , s. of J.E. Jones , minister (Presb.) and his wife of that place. He was educated at Holyhead county school , the University College , Bangor (where he graduated B.A. ), and Mansfield College , Oxford ( B.Litt. ). He gained an M.A. degree of the University of Wales in 1921 for his thesis on the hymnology of the Methodist Revival , with par- ticular reference to the hymns of Williams , Pantycelyn . He was ord. in 1922 , and served his ministry at Colwyn Bay ( 1922-24 ), Moriah , Utica , U.S.A. ( 1924-31 ), and Douglas Rd. , Liverpool ( 1931-51 ). In 1951 he was appointed general secretary of the Presbyterian Missionary Society , and visited the mission fields in India , Pakistan and Brittany . In 1926 he m. Elizabeth Margaret Edwards , and they had two sons. He d. 24 Dec. 1960 .

During the period he spent in Utica he published a history of Moriah . He gave great service to Welsh life on Merseyside , establishing centres for Urdd Gobaith Cymru , editing Y Glannau from 1944 onwards, and serving as a member of the editorial board of Y Ffordd (a journal for the youth of the Presb. church ). He also published Llawlyfr ar genhadaeth bersonol ( 1939 ). His most important contribution, however, was Aleluia gan y Parch, William Williams Pant y Celyn ( 1926 ), a diplomatic edition of parts I-VI of Aleluia , 1744-47 by Williams , Pantycelyn ( DWB , 1077-8) , with a valuable introduction. Since copies of Aleluia are so very scarce, this volume is invaluable to students of William Williams ’ hymns.
