MORGAN , IWAN JAMES ( 1904 - 1966 ), extra-mural tutor and politician .

Born 1904 at Tondu, Glam. , the son of John James Morgan ( 1870 - 1954 ), the head teacher of Garw secondary school , 1909-35 . He was educated at Bridgend County School and the University College of Wales , Aberystwyth , where he graduated with honours in economics in 1926 . He was awarded the degree of M.A. in 1929 for a thesis on the ‘ Origins and Development of the University Movement in Wales in the Nineteenth Century ’. Morgan lectured in night classes and extra-mural courses in several places in Wales , including Coleg Harlech , until his appointment in 1935 as tutor-in-charge of the Department of Extra-Mural Studies , University College , Cardiff . He remained in this position until his death. He became a popular lecturer and broadcaster on historical, international, economic and social subjects . He was a member of Plaid Cymru in the 1930s , but a disagreement with Saunders Lewis over his attitude towards Socialism led him to join the Labour Party . He was chosen as the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for Cardiganshire in 1940 , and stood against Roderick Bowen in 1945 and 1950 . Morgan published in 1943 the pamphlets in Attlee's Reply following the response of the Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee to the demand for a Secretary of State for Wales . Throughout his life he was vehemently opposed to Communism. He edited the volume The college by the sea ( 1928 ), a collection of reminiscences of the University College of Wales , Aberystwyth , He also published a large number of articles in journals and newspapers on matters of national interest. In 1944 he was elected a member of the court of governors and council of the National Library of Wales .

He m. Esme Lewis , Caerau , Maesteg . He d. 1 Aprl. 1966 at Cardiff Royal Infirmary .
