PHILLIPS , PHILIP ESMONDE ( 1888 - 1960 ), Rear Admiral ;

b. 16 June 1888 , younger son of P.S. Phillips , Crumlin Hall, Mon. He m. in 1933 Mrs Ellinor Curtis , daughter of Capt. Glen Kidston (the marriage was dissolved in 1950 ); there was one son. Phillips was educated at Britannia Royal Naval College , Dartmouth . He was awarded the D.S.O. and bar during World War I . In 1927 he became Chief Staff Officer to the Rear Admiral of Submarines . From 1935 to 1937 he was Second Naval Member of the Commonwealth Naval Board . From 1937 to 1938 he was Chief of Staff and Maintenance Captain , the Nore . He was placed on the Retired List as captain in 1938 . The following year he was appointed A.D.C. to the King . With the outbreak of World War II in 1939 he was recalled to active service in the rank of Rear Admiral and served first as Flag Officer , Milford Haven and later as Senior British Naval Officer , Trinidad . He retired finally in 1945 and was appointed C.B. He was Deputy Lieutenant for Breconshire . He lived at Woodberry Cottage , Itchester , Sussex , and d. 27 Feb. 1960 at Chichester hospital .
