He came to Wales in 1915 , as a lecturer in Semitic languages at the University College , Cardiff , being promoted Professor at Cardiff in 1927 , where he remained until his retirement in 1944 . He was Dean of Theology of the University of Wales , 1937-40 . A number of honours were bestowed upon him, including being Schweich lecturer ( 1926 ), having an hon. D.D. degree conferred on him by the universities of Aberdeen and Wales and D. Theol. of the University of Halle-Wittemberg , and receiving the British Academy 's Burkitt medal for Biblical Studies .
He made his name as the author of a number of standard books which were greatly needed in the field of Old Testament studies; among them were Prophecy and the prophets in the Old Testament ( 1923 ), The decline and fall of the Hebrew kingdoms ( 1926 ), Hebrew religion ( 1930 ) and A history of Israel ( 1932 ), the last two in collaboration with W.O.E. Oesterley . He published a number of books also on the Hebrew and Syriac languages.
His other considerable contribution was his enormous labour for the Society for Old Testament Study ; he was its secretary for a very long period ( 1917-46 ) and president twice (in 1928 and 1946 ). After retiring he went to live in Ealing , and d. 26 June 1964 .
