He took an intelligent interest in agriculture and in his estates; he was president of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society . He was chairman of the Caerns. agricultural education committee and played an important role in establishing the College of Agriculture at Plas Glynllifon . In 1945 he was appointed Lord Lieut. of Caerns. , and held office until 1960 . As Custos rotulorum and Chief Magistrate he laid great stress on the preservation of the county's archives . He took a prominent part in establishing the county record office in 1947 and it was under his chairmanship of the County Records Committee that the Calendar of the Caernarvonshire Quarter Sessions Records 1541-1558 was published in 1956 . He was president of the Caerns. Historical Society from 1957 until his death. He fulfilled a number of other offices in the administrative and public life of the county. He was knighted in 1960 and d. on 16 Dec. 1961 . He m. in 1929 Gladys , daughter of John J. Waterbury and his wife, of New Jersey , U.S.A. They had no children.
