a son of a cleric, born and educated at Llanrwst, Denbighshire, he entered Christ Church, Oxford, in 1598 at the age of sixteen. He graduated B.A., 16 February 1603-4 and M.A., 1606-7. Anthony Wood mistakes him for another cleric of the same name, also the son of a cleric but from Hampshire and a famous preacher in the University who published a book of sermons in 1615, Verba Dierum or the Dayes report of God's glory …
