EVANS, JONAH (1836-1896), preparatory school tutor, and minister (Congl.);
b. 7 Feb. 1836 in Llanfihangel, Carms. He enjoyed very few privileges early in life, and was a farm servant for years. He attended Carmarthen College, 1859-61, and opened a preparatory school at Llanybydder in 1861, before moving it to Llansawel under the name ‘Sawel Academy’. He prepared students for the ministry and other callings. He was a prominent leader in establishing the Congregational church at Llansawel, and was ord. as minister there in 1870. He served the churches on Sundays, and lectured on ‘Agriculture’ throughout the country. He wrote Cofiant Evan Jones, Crugybar, 1804-78 (Llandeilo, 1883), and Y Berllan Ddiwinyddol. He d. 31 March 1896.
