HOPKINS , EVAN ( [1801]? - 1888 ), geologist ;

b. in Swansea . He spent his youth in the ironworks at Penydarren , Dowlais and Rhymney . In 1833 he went to South America to oversee gold and silver mines ; he returned there later to research in the Andes and Panama ; in 1852 he was in Australia as an advisor to a gold mining company . He was an expert on magnetic ores .
