HUGHES , WILLIAM ( 1779 - 1836 ), engineer ;

b. at Penyclawdd, Mon. He was trained as an engineer , and gained considerable fame in his profession. Among the designs with which he was involved were the Ellesmere Canal , the Caledonian Canal , deepening the river Clyde , and dredging Lough Neagh . He d. in Northampton , 1836 .
