JAMES , JOHN LLOYD ( DWB , 425).

His novel Habakkuk Crabb was published in Liverpool in 1901 . It was later given a different cover and a new title — Croesi'r Bont, sef anturiaethau H.C .

JAMES , JOHN LLOYD ( Clwydwenfro ; 1835 - 1919 ), Congregational minister and historian ;

b. in the parish of Llan-gan, Pembs. , and brought up (after he had lost his parents) by his grandfather at Llanglydwen in the same county. He was at Glandŵr school under Shôn Gymro and W. Davies of Rhydyceisiaid . He was received into church membership at Hebron, Pembs. , June 1848 , and started to preach there 14 Aug. 1853 . He was at Carmarthen College , 1855-9 ; was ordained, 18 Dec. 1859 at S. Bride's-super-Ely, Glam. , and took charge of Whitchurch (ordained there 2 Feb. 1860 ). He ministered at Capel Ifor , Dowlais , 1869-75 , Moreton-in-Marsh , Gloucestershire , 1875-9 , March , Cambridgeshire , 1879-95 , and 1899-1902 . He retired in 1915 and d. 17 April 1919 .

Clwydwenfro contributed much to Welsh periodical literature. A story by him, ‘ Edwin Powel ,’ appeared in Seren Cymru , 1856-7 . He edited Cyfaill y Werin , 1862 , and the poetry column in Y Twr ( Aberdare ) for some time. He wrote much to Y Beirniad , Y Tywysydd , Y Diwygiwr , and Cennad Hedd . He specialized in local and religious history . His two chief published works were Hanes Cymanfaoedd yr Annibynwyr ( 1867-9 , in five parts, unfinished), and Hanes Eglwys Glandŵr , 1902 .
