MORRIS , JOHN ( 1813 - 1896 ), Independent college principal ;

b. at Carmarthen in 1813 . He was intended for the law, but turned to preaching , went to the grammar school of David Peter (q.v.) at Carmarthen , and thence ( 1833 ) to Blackburn Independent College . He was pastor at Saddleworth ( 1837-42 ) and Morley ( 1842-54 ). On the resignation of Henry Griffiths (q.v.) he was appointed principal of Brecon Independent College , which in 1869 was removed to its present buildings. In 1879 he was elected chairman of the Union of Welsh Independents . He d. at Brecon , very suddenly, 27 Nov. 1896 .
