WILLIAMS , WILLIAM ( 1747 - 1812 ), Evangelical cleric ,

generally known as ‘ William Williams , Waterbeach ,’ Cambs. He is described in one source as ‘of South Wales , living near Cowbridge .’ Educated at Magdalene College , Cambridge ( B.A. 1768 ), he was ordained and appointed chaplain to an English foundry in Rotterdam ; afterwards he was vicar of Waterbeach , 1794-1812 . William Owen Pughe (q.v.) , the official editor of the 1807 ( Cambridge ) edition of Y Bibl Cyssegr-Lan , is said to have been so negligent that nearly 3,000 copies were issued in a defective form, chapter viii of the Book of Judges being omitted altogether. This caused much concern to Thomas Charles (of Bala , q.v.) and the other sponsors of this issue of the Welsh Bible , but the situation was saved by the energy and scholarship of William Williams . He d. 13 Oct. 1812 ; there is a mural commemorative tablet in Waterbeach church .
