JONES, JOHN EDWARD , IOAN MAESGRUG (1914-1998) .

Born 23 December 1914 at 35 Mulliner Street, Liverpool, son of Thomas Robert Jones and his wife Elizabeth Jane (Roberts); he subsequently lived at a number of other addresses in Liverpool. He was educated at Sefton Park Council School and the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys. He was employed at the British Engine Boiler and Electrical Insurance Co, Manchester, 1933-45 but studied in his free time with the Metropolitan College, St Albans, succeeding in the examinations for the Northern Universities Matriculation, 1931, ACC Part I 1935, ACIS 1938, B.Com. 1942, Ll.B. Bar Final 1945. He was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1945 and joined the Northern Circuit. He was appointed circuit judge in 1969 and served until 1984. He held other offices: vice-chairman Workmen's Compensation (Supplementary) and Pneumociniosis and Byssinos Benefits Board 1965-69, JP Liverpool and Lancashire 1966, vice-chairman Lancashire Quarter Sessions 1966-69, vice-chairman Merseyside Magistrates Association 1974-78. He was active in the community, especially in Welsh circles in Liverpool, serving as vice-president and president of the Liverpool Choral Society 1973-87, president of the Merseyside Branch of the Red Cross, a governor of Aigburth Vale comprehensive school 1985-88. He was a director of the Chatham Building Society 1955-59 and the Welsh Calvinistic Assurance Trust 1953-59. He was a member of the Gorsedd of Bards (white robe) taking the name ‘Ioan Maesgrug’, a Fellow of the Merseyside Eisteddfod and an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Wales at Heathfield Road, serving as Moderator of the Liverpool presbytery in 1971. He had a particular interest in the history of the Welsh in Liverpool. He published Antur a menter Cymry Lerpwl (1987); Cylch y pump ar hugain, ei hanes a'i draddodiadau (1989); Dogfennau'r Gymdeithas — Cymdeithas Genedlaethol Gymaeg Lerpwl (1994); paratôrdd Fynegai cofnodion pregethau draddodwyd yng Nghapel Heathfield Road 1942-1991; Bywgraffiadur Cylch y pump ar hugain Lerpwl.

He married Katherine Elizabeth Edwards 8 November 1945. He died 28 June 1998.
